Deuteronomy 6:16-17. This is an excerpt from Moses sermon to Israel AFTER they wandered for 40 years in the wilderness. The “real-time” incident is recorded somewhere else in the Old Testament. WHERE can you find this story and WHAT was the real temptation Israel faced?
Once again, thanks for all the answers and some questions. It is a great blessing to me personally to know that you have spent time in the Word of God and have discussed the questions throughout the week with fellow believers.
Here is a summary of the answers given: one person answered: “Massah, which means testing, was named because it was the location of the third time that the people of Israel grumbled against the Lord……While the grumbling in all instances had to do with physical provision of water and food, in reality the people of Israel did not trust that God was always with them and that He would provide for them. By this third time of grumbling at Massah, God had already provided water, quail for meat and manna, but there was still a lack of trust.”
Another person answered: The “Real time” incident can be found in Numbers 20:3-13. The real temptation was to return to Egypt because they didn’t believe Moses could take them to the Promised Land.”
Let’s go back to join the Israelites in the wilderness and look around; there is nothing but wilderness. Wouldn’t you ask the question: Why has God brought us here? Today, we ask the same question when things are getting rough. “Why has God brought me to this place? Why do I need to go through all these troubles? Why isn’t God with me here, comforting and helping me through all this?”
In Jesus own words, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah.” In other words, grumbling will not get you anywhere with God. GOD IS ALWAYS THERE AND HIS POWER AND LOVE HAS NOT SUBSIDED NO MATTER WHAT WE MAY FACE. Learning to trust Him and His word should be the guiding principle so we will not give in to temptations no matter who or what is tempting us. God’s love and mercy is sufficient in all circumstances. He will provide for us. Trust Him.
